We have a fun week ahead with Picture Day on Thursday and Trunk or Treat on Friday! Don’t forget to pre-order your school pictures, and get ready for an evening of costumes, treats, and Quarton community fun.

A big congratulations to our 5th graders for winning the participation award at this past weekend’s district 5th Grade Run/Walk! Thanks to their terrific turnout, Quarton brought home the trophy for the second year in a row! Thank you to the families and staff members who came out to support our students and represent our school.

This week also begins our Centennial Spotlight journey through Quarton’s decades, starting with the 1920s. As we embrace the “Remember” part of our centennial theme, we look forward to sharing the stories and memories that connect our community across generations.

Thank you for all the ways you show up for Quarton. We look forward to seeing everyone at Trunk or Treat!

Quarton in the 1920s: The Beginning of Our Story

Our centennial theme - Remember • Celebrate • Imagine - begins with remembering the people, places, and experiences that shaped Quarton. This week, we start our journey through the decades in the 1920s, when a growing Birmingham needed more room for its schoolchildren and our school’s story began.

Construction on Quarton began in 1927, and in September 1928, Quarton opened with 217 students in kindergarten through sixth grade, led by its first principal, Miss Fredericks. Built on a six-acre site, the school was designed to accommodate 560 students, leaving plenty of room for the community to grow. One account puts the construction cost at $313,000!

The Quarton name connects us to Fred and Albert Quarton, brothers who had owned the land where the school was built. Fred also served on the school board and Village Commission. Architect Frederick Madison designed the building with both practicality and beauty in mind, aiming for a school that fit the character of the surrounding homes.

What would those first students have found inside? A Detroit Free Press article announcing the new school described 13 classrooms, a library, a gymnasium and auditorium, a music room, and a cafeteria. Perhaps the most surprising detail for today’s families: it also listed rooms for a nurse, doctor, and dentist!

Among Quarton’s earliest students were brothers Harry and Walter Walsh, who returned for the school’s 90th anniversary celebration in 2017. The photos shared here show Harry’s school portrait from 1928 and the brothers back at Quarton nearly nine decades later, a wonderful connection between the children who helped begin our story and the community carrying it forward today.

Help us remember! As we explore Quarton’s history, your family’s stories can bring each decade to life. Please share favorite teachers, school traditions, memorable moments, and old photographs from any era by emailing quarton100yr@gmail.com. We’d love to feature these memories in upcoming Centennial Spotlights and our Centennial Celebration.

It takes a village to make Quarton shine. Thank you to the following volunteers, staff members, community members and businesses who have generously shared their time, talents and resources with our school!

• Our AMAZING Quarton Staff  for planning and executing our Fun Run
• Katy Niglas for presenting the 2026-2027 Reflections program to the students last week

• Bloom Pediatric for providing the mobile vaccination clinic
• Mr. Cameron and other BPS PE teachers for planning the 5th Grade District Run/Walk
• Our FANTASTIC Custodians for keeping Quarton clean and safe (National Custodian's Day was Oct 2nd!)
• Marisa Marco for the stunning 100 year school rendering and graphic design featured at the top of this newsletter

• All the community members that have sent in memories, pictures and memorabilia in honor of Quarton's 100th anniversary

And thank you to all the parents that volunteered this past week to captain a Bike Bus meeting point, noon-aide and work the bandaid center. We truly have the BEARY best community!
