Quarton in the 1930s: School Days in a Changing World

As we continue the Remember chapter of our centennial celebration, our journey brings us to the 1930s. Quarton was still a young school when the Great Depression reshaped life across the country. Its effects reached our own neighborhood: construction in Quarton Lake Estates slowed during the 1930s before picking up again in the 1940s.

Amid the challenges of the decade, a small newspaper story offers a glimpse of students helping one another. In December 1939, The Highlander, Baldwin High School’s student newspaper, reported that high school sewing classes had made approximately 75 choir robes for Quarton students to wear in their Christmas program. Imagine the time and care that went into preparing those robes and the younger students getting ready for their performance! Click here to access the entire student newspaper.

These everyday moments help bring Quarton’s history to life. Beyond the dates and buildings are the people, school celebrations, and acts of kindness that make each decade worth remembering.

Do you have a piece of Quarton’s past to share? We welcome photographs, school programs, favorite teacher stories, and family memories from the 1930s—or any decade! Please send them to quarton100yr@gmail.com so we can continue uncovering and sharing our school’s story.

It takes a village to make Quarton shine. Thank you to the following volunteers, staff members, community members and businesses who have generously shared their time, talents and resources with our school!

• Anna Paterson for planning and coordinating ALL of Trunk or Treat
• Kathryn Christensen at Bloomfield Party Balloons for making the beautiful Trunk or Treat entrance balloon arch
• Marisa Marco for donating her time and talents to DJ Trunk or Treat for us again!
• All the parents and staff that provided a trunk - you all knocked it out of the park!
• Wachler Associates for the massive candy donation, for the first time ever we didn’t run out of candy!
• All the parents that donated candy or provided funds to purchase candy
• Leon Halip for providing Quarton’s private mini photo shoot fundraiser
• Sara Minkin & Lindsey Barnett for managing Picture Day

And thank you to all the parents that volunteered this past week to help with Picture Day, captain a Bike Bus meeting point, noon-aide and work the bandaid center. We truly have the BEARY best community!
